The Pigargo Project advances in the protection of endangered birds, thanks to the combined efforts of EDP, GREFA, and with the use of EnverTec materials.

Over 300 electric utility poles identified as hazardous for birdlife have been modified in Asturias, Cantabria, and other autonomous communities. This intervention used cutting-edge materials and it represents a major step forward in sustainability, leading to a drastic reduction in electrocution-related bird deaths in key areas for the European white-tailed eagle, one of the most emblematic species currently being reintroduced, as well as for many other protected species.

The work has involved modifying power lines by installing solutions provided by EnverTec, such as our pioneering C3670EBAV_AR Avifauna Insulator, together with V0 Flame-Retardant Silicone Covers, type STSC from the SWP family. These solutions insulate and shield critical points on the poles, preventing birds from coming into contact with conductive components and enhancing safety for avifauna.

A key case is located in a region of the Cantabrian Mountains, where more than 160 poles were modified following several electrocution incidents. As a result, and with the identification of new risk areas, protocols have been activated to expand these measures to other sections of the power grid.

This project demonstrates that when specialized technology is combined with a genuine will to protect the environment, the impact can be significant. Thanks to the ongoing commitment and investment of EDP, and the coordination work of GREFA within the framework of the Pigargo Project, each intervention is making a real difference in one of the most fragile and valuable ecosystems in the north of the Iberian Peninsula.
